There are two download modes. The peer2peer download mode is for free. So it works like a file sharing tool (bearshare, napster etc.) and once downloading is completed your computer keeps on uploading data to other users (seeding).
If you want to increase the download-speed there is a download via ftp possible, but you have to make a donation to the bude in order to get that:
